BALI ITINERARY DAY 1 – UBUD,BALI

BALI ITINERARY DAY 1 MORNING ☀️

To make your way from the International airport to Ubud town, you will need to spend approximately 3 hours. Unfortunately, you can’t get a GrabCar from the airport, so it is better to take a taxi or arrange transportation with your hotel. As an alternative, you can take a taxi to Denpasar or Kuta and then use a grab to get to Ubud town. This option will help you save some money. Once you arrive in Ubud, start exploring the town as it offers some of the best photography locations. This tip is especially helpful if you’re planning a Bali itinerary for first-timers.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCE AT SARASWATI TEMPLE, UBUD

Pura Saraswati is a stunning temple in central Ubud town that features water ponds filled with pink lotuses. It’s right at the edge of Ubud town center and is a lovely introduction to the beautiful cultural Ubud and the perfect start to your Bali Itinerary.

There are traditional Balinese dances & folklore are performed on the temple’s open stage in the evenings and you have to buy tickets to watch the performance.

Our tips 💡
The temple can get pretty packed almost soon after it opens. If you want to get pictures sans people, arrive early, possibly before the temple opens!

Also, if you don’t manage to get tickets, but want to watch the cultural performance, the best seat in the house to watch the performances or the temple’s ceremonies is from Cafe Lotus (minimum dinner cover charge of IDR200,000 or USD 15) right at the entrance to the temple grounds.

BALI ITINERARY DAY 1 AFTERNOON ⛅️

LUNCH AT FAIR WARONG BALE | @fairwarungbale

Local Balinese food 🍲🍝 at @fairwarungbale. Fair Warung Bale is the only restaurant in the world that supports and funds a Massive Public Healthcare Program 🚑 by contributing not some, but ALL of its profits to the Fair Future Foundation and its Free Health and Medical Care programs. And the food is very good and it’s at the start of the Bali Itinerary as an immediate introduction to local food.

So each meal you have here helps contribute 2 free medical treatments to people who really need them and helps fund a new pediatric hospital 🏥 building. Amazing stuff! We very happily contributed 2-4 free medical treatments when we were there and have been relentlessly promoting the place since. Fair Warung Balé also provides a social structure to help young adults between the ages of 14 – 22 years learn skills that would help them get jobs. Please check out www.fairfuturefoundation.org to find out more about this amazing social endeavour!

And just down the road is a fully gluten-free café that has awesome cakes and pastries. We went back 3 times during our stay in Ubud!

AFTERNOON WANDER AROUND UBUD

Ubud is really fun to wander around; it’s small enough that you won’t be over tired from walking around in the heat, yet there are enough little lanes and nooks, small temples and cute shops to keep you going for the afternoon.

BALI ITINERARY DAY 1 EVENING 🌅

EVENING STROLL AT CAMPUHAN RIDGE WALK, UBUD

This was by far one of our favorite free things to do in Ubud! Just outside the main stretch of Ubud, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is within walking distance from pretty much anywhere within the Ubud town center.

The walk goes through amazing views Ubud’s jungles to stunning grass valleys and rice fields 🌾 further along. It is usually a little crowded in the evenings, but it is such a lovely walk to see the sunset. You can walk to the end of the ridgewalk which takes about 1 hour and either turn around (though take note it will be dark by then) or get a ride back to Ubud town center from the other side.

Starting the Campuhan Ridge Walk should be on every traveler’s Bali itinerary for first-timers, not only because of the scenic path but also because of the beautiful Pura Gunung Lebah temple located at the beginning of the walk. This Balinese temple was founded by Rishi Markendaya, a wandering Indian Hindu holy man who brought Hinduism to Bali and established a string of temples across the island. Although it is more catered to locals, it is less visited by tourists. Pura Gunung Lebah is believed to possess strong earth energies and is said to be responsible for the birth of Ubud.

👍 Hell yeah! Oh so green and beautiful, and oh yeah! It’s free!

Our tips 💡
The sunsets are beautiful here but are surprisingly earlier than in a lot of other places in South East Asia. In Bali, the sun sets around 6:15pm, so get to the Campuhan Ridge Walk at about 5 or 5:30pm to get a nice spot to enjoy the sunset.

To capture photos without people in the background, we suggest arriving at this spot in the morning around 7 am. However, keep in mind that the walk is more pleasant in the evening when it’s not scorching hot!❄️

If you plan to enter and explore Pura Gunung Lebah, be aware that the temple caters more to the Balinese than tourists. Therefore, both men and women are required to wear appropriate clothing that covers their knees and shoulders. These are essential Bali itinerary 5 days tips for first-timers to keep in mind.

👌 Yeah, it’s pretty cool. It is a little bit pricier than your average warong, but the ambiance is so nice it can make up for it. Each table is set in its own little nook that you forget that you’re at a restaurant with other people. Perfect for a romantic night.

Our tips 💡
If you’re a mosquitoes magnet like I am, make sure to ask the restaurant to get more mosquito repellent for you. It will make the dinner much more pleasant (and less itchy!).

BALI ITINERARY DAY 2 MORNING ☀️

COFFEE AND BREAKFAST IN HOTEL ROOM
Had a very early wake up call and breakfast in the hotel. Check out where we stayed in Ubud here!

STROLLING THROUGH THE RICE TERRACES IN TEGALALANG
So you know how the sunset looks different in different places? Some places you will remember as having the most beautiful sunsets? Well, the Bali sun brings out the most beautiful green-yellow glow on the rice fields. As the sun comes up over the seemingly 15 foot terraces, the landscape is so crazy beautiful that you’re almost waiting for the fairies to come out and play! We never expected rice terraces 🌾🌾 to leave us so speechless, but Bali’s Tegalalang does. So much so that we don’t have much else to say about it except to be sure to go!

🚗 Arrange your car with your hotel or villa

Cost?
💸💸 Approx. Free up to IDR 172623 (USD 12) per person

Value?
👍 Hell yeah! Individual rice farmers own small plots of the land that makes up the Tegalalang rice terraces. So do expect that the individual farmers may charge a fee as go through their plot. We heard many travelers say they had to pay anywhere between USD1-3 fee for each stop. We went early (7am – maybe it was even earlier than the farmers?) and didn’t come across any farmers asking for a fee.

Our tips 💡
It’s a relatively easy walk, but there are quite a few steps and ups & downs, so if you have trouble with your knees, bring a brace and have good walking shoes. It also gets quite muddy so we would suggest to leave your favorite shoes at the hotel! Arrange with local drivers or hotel drivers for the whole day to go to Tegalalang since they have no Grab Car there (Grab Car is the Uber in Southeast Asia). Also, get here by 7am to escape crowds and also possibly miss the entrance fee, like we did!

SWINGING OVER THE ABYSS AT BALI SWING | @bali.swing

Have you ever swung over the abyss? Bali Swing seem like it could potentially be a tourist trap, but we loved it! Swinging at 25 meters above ground, with a breathtaking view left us full of happy butterflies in our stomach!

There are a quite a number places that have these swings throughout Bali. For you guys who look for a little more insurance, security and the like, Bali Swing makes sure everyone who has a go on their swings are all completely harnessed up. They have 5 main swings going up to 78 meters above ground. Though it is a hefty entrance fee, you can try out all the swings for as long as you and, have a buffet lunch, and a try out a few other activities.

👍 Hell yeah! It is expensive, but swinging high into the sky, over that river meters below, was totally worth it for us!

Our tips 💡
Go early! No, seriously. Go. Early. We got just after it opened so we were among the first people there. Otherwise we heard you could be waiting for up to an hour for just one swing. This makes for a really nice picture, so if you want that dreamy picture ladies, wear a long super flowly dress, but make sure to wear boyshorts or something under as everything flies up when they swing you! There are also guys who take photos for you (you have to pay for the photos), so if you have a travel buddy, you can just stand near them and know that that’s the best angle to take the shot!

LUNCH AT KAFE BALI
This is a nice quiet place to chill for lunch after the busy morning and to take a break from the midday heat! Serving wholesome food, they use Bali-harvested, organic and chemical-free produce whenever possible with flavors and cuisines from Mexian to Italian to local Indonesian. And they care about the environment being one of the first restaurants in Ubud to stop using plastic straws. Yay! You can also pick up some gifts and support small local businesses at their little shop, KAFE Kares.

EASY CHILL AFTERNOON IN UBUD

When in Ubud, taking the time to wander around the town is an absolute must-do on your Bali itinerary. Not only is it incredibly beautiful and laid-back, but shopping here is also super fun! If you’re on the lookout for the popular round woven rattan bags, head straight to Ubud Market. There’s a store that faces the main road that offers a variety of styles, sizes, and colors. Trust us, it’s almost impossible to leave with just one bag! Additionally, take advantage of the calming atmosphere and indulge in a massage or yoga class with a view of the rice fields. It’s the perfect way to alleviate all your worries and stress during your 5-day Bali itinerary as a first-timer.

Our tips 💡
If you’re at the Ubud Market, always bargain! The best few bargain tips? Know roughly how much you’re willing to pay for the item. If you’re pushing for a hard bargain, make sure you have small change and If possible, keep your big bills hidden. There’s nothing worse than bargaining super low, and pulling out a big bill to ask them to give you back change (they may not even have the change available).

BALI ITINERARY DAY 2 NIGHT 🌙

DINNER AT JALAN GOUTAMA IN UBUD
Jalan Goutama is in center of Ubud and is a small, quaint street full of character and life! It’s a small lane but it’s lined with designer boutiques, cute, quirky shops, spas and super fun restaurants. Closed to traffic, you can walk with ease without having to worry about mopeds and the like. During the day, families, locals and tourists mill about doing their daily business. At night the street comes abuzz with fun lights, live music, bars and good food. We didn’t suggest a particular place because we think the area is fun to explore and has so many different cuisines that you can pop into each restaurant to see what suits your fancy! (no pics yet)

👍 Hell yeah! Such a fun place to spend the evening! In the day, it’s just like any small quiet little street and once evening hits, it becomes a lively place with such good vibes. Has food and drinks at a different price ranges so you can choose what fits your budget best. We came here a few times for the vibe…and oh yes, the food, of course.

Our tips 💡
It’s fun to come here a little earlier in the evening to grab a drink at a spot facing the street and watch how it transforms. As evening hits, you can people watch as this tourist little lane turns from quiet little lane to evening local bustle as little kids – local and foreign – come together and play tag or football through the carless street, to a fun yet chilled night.

Take a stroll through the back streets from Seminyak Main Street to get to Sea Circus Bali. The traffic is not only crazy in Seminyak, but there are also a number of one-way streets in Seminyak, so waiting for your car and sitting in traffic may take you even longer than walking.

HANG OUT ON SEMINYAK BEACH
Part of a stretch of beaches that go from the edge of Kuta all the way to the coastal corners of Canggu. Although the beach is super accessible from Seminyak’s main Petitenget stretch, it wasn’t as crowded as we expected. It isn’t know for crystal clear water and white sandy beaches (so don’t go with expectations), but it is good fun to chill and play a bit in the afternoon.

Our tips 💡
This is a public beach so BYO everything! From paddle boards to play with or a good book, to towels, drinks, snacks.

BALI ITINERARY DAY 3 EVENING 🌅

EVENING STROLL AT TANAH LOT
Pura Tanah Lot is breathtakingly stunning. Literally meaning ‘small island floating on the sea’, Tanah Lot is supposedly the most visited & photographed temple in Bali. Pura Tanah Lot is one of the 7 sea temples around the southwestern coast of Bali. Each of the 7 sea temples was intended to be within sight of the next, forming a chain along the coast. So the clifftop site of Pura Uluwatu to the south is actually visible from the inside of Pura Tanah Lot, and we thought this was pretty amazing!

👍 Hell yeah! Be warned though, it can get super super crowded there for sunset. People go there for the sunset in busloads! But Tanah Lot makes for a fantastic sunset viewing point.

Our tips 💡
Arrange with Grab driver to pick up after few hours (at least 3 hours). We can’t emphasize enough that this is another famous spot to catch sunsets, so, expect massive amount of people in the evening. If you prefer to have the place a little more to yourself and escape the crowds, come here early in the morning instead. Sunrise is also beautiful and it is much more peaceful. Also, if you are a little wary of local superstition, be aware that there is a fabled ‘Bali Curse’ at Tanah Lot. We were warned by the locals as it is said that unmarried couples who came here would soon break up after they leave. It didn’t stop us from going, but we just had to be sure to pass on the ‘warning’.

👍 Hell yeah! If anything, just for the Acai Berry Bowl!

Our tips 💡
Acai Berry Bowl is freakin next level yumminess! (p.s. the magic for us is in the 🌿🍃 mint leaves – they add an explosion of minty flavor to the bowl. So ask for more mint leaves!) But the air conditioning in this place is super strong, so it gets really really crowded from midday to late afternoon for people stopping in for a cool down drink and snack. It’s worth the wait because that Berry bowl hits the spot when you’re melting from the Bali midday heat!

BALI ITINERARY DAY 4 – CANGGU, BALI (DAY TRIP)

BALI ITINERARY DAY 4 MORNING ☀️

Skip the hotel breakfast and book a car (either hotel car or Grab) to head out to Canggu. It just takes about 30 minutes. Canggu is maybe Bali’s hippest new kid on the block. When you get into the Canggu district, you will see and feel why; you’re greeted with fields and fields of green rice paddies, big, small, terraced or organic, on all sides. It’s stunningly serene (yet impossibly busy with traffic maneuvering through the smallest of lanes) and has amazing cafes, villas and of course the beach.

Our tips 💡
Book a grab driver for the whole day to take you around Canggu and back to Seminyak since you can’t call a Grab car from the Canggu district. Either that or rent a scooter!

COFFEE AND BRUNCH AT PELOTON | @pelotonsupershop
Pelaton is in a newer but quickly becoming very popular area of Canggu called Berawa. Pelaton is a super popular café that happens to be vegan. We say that because after trying the food, you would have a very high bar on what eating vegan could be like! All their products are local, fresh and mostly organic, including their coffee beans J Every dish is not only so delicious, but is also plated beautifully. They also have gluten-free options, which was big plus for us!

BALI ITINERARY DAY 4 AFTERNOON ⛅️

AFTERNOON STROLL THROUGH THE RICE PADDIES, CANGGU
There’s something really peaceful about taking a stroll through the ricefields 🌾🌾 in Canggu. Rice fields are a common sight in Bali’s landscape, where agriculture has been an important part in the life and culture of the Balinese people for thousands of years. What’s amazing about Canggu is even with the many cafes and villas now popping up, the beauty & tranquility of the rice fields surrounded by coconut trees 🌴🌴🌴 still dominate the landscape.

Our tips 💡
You have to drive around randomly to find the best, most beautiful rice fields. There are some really small patches right in the middle of Canggu, and some massive ones that stretch as far as the horizon! And hardly anyone in sight so you really get the whole place to yourself.

👍 Hell yeah! One of the best coffee places in Seminyak as well as the really good gluten-free bread!

Our tips 💡
It does get quite crowded, so get there for an early brunch to get a seat. Also, we didn’t try this, but if you get hooked on their coffee, they apparently delivery coffee straight to your Villa or Hotel in Seminyak 7 days a week! Coffee addiction sorted!

WALKABOUT IN SEMINYAK
The feel around Seminyak is quite different from that of Ubud. It’s a little more commercial but it’s still fun, especially the back lanes and small alleyways. And like everywhere else, you get a much better feel of the place when you wander around on foot.

How to get here?
There are many areas around Seminyak so the walk and wandering could take you quite far away from the main street. You can always get a Grab or hop on a scooter to get you back to your hotel/villa.

Free entry

👌 Yeah, it’s pretty cool

Our tips 💡
Seriously, get lost in Seminyak. There are so many cute cafes and boutiques that we came across, but honestly, can’t tell you where they are because there are so many lanes and alleys throughout Bali. Have a bottle of water with you, sunscreen and go explore! Also, if you can wander towards the direction of Kynd Community (café), Great! because it’ll be where we suggest for you stop for lunch!

BALI ITINERARY DAY 5 AFTERNOON ⛅️

LATE LUNCH AT KYND COMMUNITY | @kyndcommunity
Kynd Community is a plant-based café has that has amazing vegan cuisine (think kind mylk like coconut, almond and soy) and an uber-Instagramable interior. They just opened a year ago but havealready expanded to take over the space next door as well! KYND Community’s motto: “by living a plant-based lifestyle, you are not only making a positive impact on the planet but you age slower, have way more energy and look even better naked!” Yay! So whether you’re following a plant-based diet or not, Kynd Community has to be on your Bali bucket list!

👍 Hell yeah! Awesome vegan cafe. The atmosphere was great and you seriously feel like trying everything on the menu!

Our tips 💡
We put this as a late lunch because this place gets very packed! If you want to get a seat by their insta-famous pink wall, you should try to go during off peak times. Either that or wait it out! Also, make sure to have the energy balls! Best we’ve had!

NICE CREAM AT MAD POPS, CANGGU | @madpopsbali
Cooling off from the Bali heat 🔥 Ice cream 🍦 is always a good idea. They have popsicles, gelato, sorbet and good ol’ ice cream 🍦 Just be warned (just so you can adjust your expectations), it’s vegan so its made from coconut milk.

Their neon signs are pretty insta-famous.

👍 Hell yeah! A cute ice cream place. They have really nice ice creams and a great range of toppings.

Our tips 💡
Try the coconut. It’s insanely gooooood 🌴 Also, it’s a tiny tiny little joint and if you follow their Instagram, you’ll be surprised that it really is a small ‘nice cream’ bar. This Mad Pops in seminyak has a line out the door pretty much from even before they open! But don’t stress, everyone wants a picture by the neon sign (and everyone knows that everyone wants that photo!). Bali has such good vibes that it doesn’t feel so bad making everyone in line wait for you to finish getting your shot!

BALI ITINERARY DAY 5 EVENING 🌅

WATCH THE SUN SET AT POTATO HEAD | @potatoheadbali
It seems we’re taking you on a constant chase for sunsets here in bali! It’s not only that sunsets are one of Sue’s favorite things, but they seem extra beautiful here in Bali. For a different scene from the day, head over to Potato Head to settle down for drinks and a beautiful sunset view. And Potato Head is Indonesian, so Yay! for supporting local.
